A call back is an invitation to the actor, from the director of a show, to take the next step down the audition path. It means that the director has seen something in an actor that they liked and wants to see them again.
Another reason is there may be two or more actors that can do the role but only one can be cast in that role and decisions must be made.
Having call backs gives the director the opportunity to see people perform again, often in a different situation.
However, do remember that not having a call back does not mean you aren't in a show!
Call backs can be extremely useful in casting a show, but they aren’t always done for every production.
